Two paths when you are feeling "off"
Rube Goldberg graduated from Berkeley with an engineering degree in 1904 and spent six months mapping sewer pipes for the city of San Francisco. Not long after he quit to draw cartoons for less than a third of the pay. The cartoons that made him famous were machines. A parrot, a string, a launched skyrocket, all rigged together to wipe a man's chin with a napkin. Nobody glanced at those cartoons. People traced them, step by step, because the overcomplication WAS the entertainment. He drew around 50,000 cartoons in his lifetime, but the machines are what stuck. In 1931, Merriam-Webster made his name an adjective: "accomplishing by complex means what seemingly could be done simply." People don't just read a complicated system. They follow it. ## 1. Two paths to follow. Function sells a lab-testing membership: 160+ lab tests a year, drawn twice a year, with clinician review, for $365 a year. The ad mentions none of that. It looks like a simple diagram somebody put together to explain a process, and that's exactly what makes it engaging enough to trace. It hands you a question at the top and two routes. YES is one clean line straight into one box. NO snakes through eleven. Your eye takes the trip on its own. The ad is interactive without a single tap, and there's a real exploration element to it: nobody tells you the difference between the two paths. You discover it one box at a time. A conclusion you reach yourself is one you'll defend. ## 2. "You feel off" is the whole targeting strategy Those words in the starting box are doing two jobs at once. Job one is the net. "Off" is deliberately ambiguous. It could mean tired, bloated, foggy, or nothing you can name, which means it can capture just about everyone scrolling past. Job two is compliance. The ad never says "sick" and never names a condition (naming one is where health advertisers land in trouble). Function stays high-level on purpose. Then the only question in the frame funnels every version of that feeling toward one door. Function gets to be the go-to for ALL of it without making a single health claim. ## 3. Every box is a relatable experience. Read the NO path: "Retell your symptoms." "Told it's 'normal.'" "Beg for a referral." "Surprise bills." There's no speech about a broken system. It just lists the steps, in the order people actually live them. The ad is aimed straight at people who've been burned by the outdated healthcare system, and the agitation comes from recognition. If you haven't lived this yourself, you know someone who has. ## 4. The NO path never ends Trace the NO route to the bottom and you find the punchline. "Sent to specialist" leads to "Sent back to PCP," and the line loops right back into the maze. The healthcare route has no exit box. The Function route has exactly one. That's the payoff for the reader who explores the whole thing. The longer you linger on this ad, the stronger the argument gets. ## How I'd Beat It This is a great problem-aware ad, but there's one test that would make the maze cost something. **Put a clock on the maze.** The NO path is measured in steps, and steps are abstract. I'd test time stamps on a few boxes: "Wait for appointment (week 4)." "Sent to specialist (month 6)." "Sent back to PCP (month 9)." Same route, but now the loop reads as a year of someone's life. The control argues the system is complicated. The time-stamped version argues it's costing them time they can't get back. --- Flowchart ads like this only convert when you've mapped the exact journey your customer has lived, box by box, in their own words.
